The Federation of Egalitarian Communities (FEC) is a network of egalitarian communities in North America
What is an egalitarian community?
An egalitarian community is a kind of intentional community in which members have equal access to resources and decision-making. The FEC classifies a community as egalitarian if it embodies the following FEC values (which are also the FEC membership criteria):
1. Shared ownership of land, labor, income, and major resources
2. Equitable provision for members’ basic needs, such as food, housing, and healthcare
3. Commitment to non-violence
4. Equal opportunity for participation in decision-making
5. Active opposition to discrimination based on race, gender, sexuality, class, etc.
6. Sustainable and ecologically responsible practices
7. Support for group communication and individual growth
Mission:
The mission of the FEC is to make egalitarian communities available to all who seek them. The FEC carries out this mission through forming, supporting, developing, and promoting egalitarian communities to the greatest extent possible.
Life in an Egalitarian Community:
Egalitarian communities offer a way to live with other people in alignment with values of cooperation, non-violence, and equality. It’s a way of living that’s not for everyone—but for those who choose it, it can be deeply fulfilling, enriching, and meaningful.
Egalitarian communities are unique in that they generally do not cost money to join or to be a member of—this makes membership accessible to a wide variety of individuals. Visit our how to join page for more information on how to get involved.
